Look, if you’re not a fan of chocolate (WHO ARE YOU?) or you can’t eat it (I feel your pain, fellow dairy-free folks) or you just don’t like the idea of your child eating their body weight in cocoa butter over the course of three days, I have some good news for you. There are other options! Options that are decadent and delightful and FUN! Options that will suit the whole family!
For the Kids
Dinosaur Hatching Egg
If you like the idea of them hunting down something that’s sugar free, but still fun, here’s your best bet. It’s an egg with a difference – an egg that you submerge in water then wait 24-48 hours as you watch your egg slowly break and your little dino hatches. Within 5-8 days your little guy will be fully grown! This one below is from Toyco but KMart and The Warehouse have similar.
This other one from Kmart is also fun – it’s faster in that you only wet the egg for five minutes and instantly become a palaeontologist, chiselling away at your egg with the little tool in the packet. This one is hard work though – when it was handed over to me, I still had trouble (and needed a lot of patience) to get my stegosaurus out!
DIY Bunny Crown
For just three bucks you can get your paws on this 14 piece set which has everything you need (well, except for scissors and glue) to put together a one-of-a-kind Easter crown! Perfect for wearing while you’re doing other Easter arts and crafts. If you are into an Easter crafternoon, may I also suggest this little Pom Pom set from Kmart.
Get to the movies for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway
If the glum weather is threatening to wash out your Easter egg hunt, why not pack up the family for a trip to the movies. Peter Rabbit 2 is a seriously cute film based on the famous Beatrix Potter books. It stars James Cordon and Rose Byrne and in some centers you’ll even find the 3D version to watch. Check out flicks.co.nz for session times!
Easter Clue Hunt, Weta Workshop
If you’re venturing out, and are in Auckland, head along to the Cave at Weta Workshop Unleashed to join their Easter Clue Hunt from April 2-4. Eight picture clues will be hidden around the Cave for hunters to identify and fill out on their clue sheet. Once you’ve found them all, hand your sheet to the team at the counter and you’ll be entered in the main draw where the top prize is a $500 Weta Cave Voucher! The Easter Clue Hunt is free, just head to Level 5, 88 Federal Street and make your way to the Cave (their shop) to grab a clue sheet from the counter and get hunting. The main prize draw will be made on Tuesday April 6.
For the adults
An Easter Margarita
Need I really say more? Well, technically there is still some chocolate involved in this one – the good folks at Coops Corner Pub have created this Chocolate Margarita, a concoction of chocolate creme egg, baileys and tequila.
Easter bath bombs
No one does a bath bomb quite like Lush – and their line-up this Easter is ridiculously delicious. There’s the Golden Egg Bath Bomb Melt, which turns your bath into a gilded, glimmery soak with uplifting and sunny bergamot oil, and moisturising cocoa butter. Eggy Weggy delivers a colourful bath with minty, citrus yolks and Humpty Dumpty is a honey-scented smasher!
The good folks at Peter Alexander currently have a super cosy and super cute range called Easter Bunnyland with loads of treats for the changing weather – all with a cute nod to Easter, ranging from subtle prints to full Bunny onesies for the whole family. And they’re on special right now!
