Breathwork can do absolute WONDERS when we’re overloaded, especially during the chaotic holiday season. So we brought in Gemma Rose, a breathwork facilitator who teaches busy people how to regulate their nervous systems with accessible breathing exercises you can do anywhere.
When we’re constantly on the go, overwhelm can become the air we breathe.
We’re spread thin across family, work, social life, house admin, mental load – AND we somehow need to squeeze in self-care in there, too.
It’s no surprise that the added stress over the holidays – like dealing with difficult family members, perhaps? – could totally push us over edge and go on a full mental breakdown!
So how do we stop ourselves from snapping at our families, resenting our colleagues, or burning out right when you’re supposed to be present with your loved ones?
The key might be deceptively simple: mindful breathing breaks.
Breathwork facilitator Gemma Rose says breathwork can help us get out of that stressful dysregulated state in today’s high-pressure environment.
She explains that being constantly ‘on’ keeps us in constant fight or flight mode. “Unless we give our nervous systems and our bodies something to come out of that stress and just rest … [being] ‘go go go’ all the time can lead to health issues [and] really difficult situations in our relationships.”
Breathwork isn’t “woo-woo”; it’s a tool that allows us to release tension, settle the body and think clearly again, says Gemma.
The best part about it, Gemma adds, is that breathwork doesn’t have to be a one-hour routine in a low-lit room, yoga mat spread out, candles lit and spa music playing. Because seriously, who has the time for that?!
Our breath is free and we ALWAYS have it. Ten intentional deep breaths can improve our nervous system more than you’d expect.
So instead of just reading about, try it for yourself. Gemma guides us through two easy breathing exercises in the video below.
