Super Blood Moon Eclipse of the Heart: What Tonight’s Lunar Phenomenon Actually Means (Plus the Dos and Don’ts of Moon Rituals)

First of all, apologies for getting Total Eclipse of the Heart stuck in your head for the entire day.

If you’re astrologically inclined – oh hi there – today is a BIG day. For the first time since the early 80s, we’ll be able to witness a supermoon, lunar eclipse and a blood moon all at the same time.

Even if you’re not, it’s still a bloody cool thing to see in the night sky – at 11.11 (I KNOW) the moon will turn a rusty red as Earth’s shadow crosses its face.

Wait, WTF is happening?

Super blood moons are an exceptionally rare combination of a supermoon and a lunar eclipse. A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth (it’s orbit is oval, not circular), and a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth’s shadow blocks the sun’s light, which would otherwise reflect off the moon’s surface.

The moon appears red as colours with longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, make it through Earth atmosphere easier, whereas hues like blue are scattered more strongly. Hence, a blood moon.

A rosé inspired moon, anyone?

Cool cool cool science is awesome, but what does it MEAN?

So glad you asked. There’s a lot going on and a lot to unpack, so let’s crack into it. First of all, what does a full moon itself mean? This is your basic astrology (and I think science but I know some people will heartily disagree). Full moons always bring out the batshit in everyone, with the energy of a full moon heightening emotions, feelings and dreams, which is why it’s NEVER a good time to have a performance review at work (yes that’s from experience).

Just as full moons can have impacts on tides, moons have impacts on us too – we are after all mostly made up of water, so it makes sense. Where do you think the word LUNAtic comes from?

Water is everything – especially for women. On a spiritual level, it allows us to tap into our emotions and to our inner voice that’s so often drowned out by everything else in life.

A Bad Moon Rising?

*Sing song voice* How many song titles can I cram into one story?

Blood moons haven’t been seen particularly favourably by ancient civilisations and groups – I mean the name blood moon doesn’t exactly conjure up positivity, does it? Christians reckoned it had something to do with the wrath of God, some Hindu stories tell of the demon Rahu drinking an elixir of immortality, and many in India still think it means ill fortune. Some Wiccans see eclipses – and therefore blood moons – as negative energy, while others revel in the renewal and rebirth qualities.

Ok so blood on the moon was not great for Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic but you win some you lose some

Modern astrologists, however, see eclipses as signals of transformation and revelations, and this particular one – a blood moon in Sagittarius – will pack a punch. And of course, in true 2021 fashion, it’ll be happening just a few days before the next Mercury retrograde. Back up your files NOW. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

They can also mark turning points in your personal growth and provide the perfect platform to literally let things go. Astrologists say that whatever you’re able to let go during an eclipse is permanent, so if you’ve been working on yourself or working through a particular issue, tonight’s the night to send it into the universe’s ether. Your instincts will also never be sharper – listen to your gut. Tonight, there’s nothing that can interfere with it.

On the surface, eclipses can be scary, eerie and intimidating. But they also speed up fate and destiny, allowing you to get to where you need to be faster. And if you’re a Virgo, Pieces, Sagittarius or Gemini, you’re going to be feeling this moon. Fair warning.

Dancing in the Moonlight, then?

So you know the astronomy and the astrology, what you should you actually do?

First of all, get out and see the moon. There’s no risk to the naked eye, so pull up a chair and a cup of Milo, settle in and appreciate a wonderful celestial phenomenon.

But if you’re keen to harness the unique energy, here are a few dos and don’ts:

  • DON’T put your crystals out to recharge. It goes against everything you’re supposed to do in a full moon, but the woo woo isn’t on your side tonight, as the light will disappear as the Earth moves between the sun and the earth. You don’t want those vibes in your crystals for a month.
  • DO sit down and get real with yourself. This is the perfect time to check in with yourself and your goals, values and dreams. You’ll be cosmically pushed towards resolutions and hard truths and forced to confront your true feelings, according to astrologists. Reflect on what’s happened, and what needs to happen next to further yourself in whatever journey you’re on right now.
  • DO moon bathe. It’s a simple process that is way less woo woo than it sounds. Just sit and either meditate or think in the moonlight about new beginnings and tying up loose ends, and moving forward.
  • DO burn stuff, but DON’T be like Rachel, Monica and Phoebe and set your apartment on fire. Light a candle, write down all you want to release, hold it close to your heart and then set slight, before dropping into something fireproof (for the love of God be careful).
