It’s Supermoon Time: What Tonight’s Lunar Phenomenon Actually Means (Plus How To Do Moon Rituals)

There are full moons and then there are SUPERMOONS – and this month’s lunar event is a doozy, so we have the best way embrace July 3’s Super Moon

If you’re astrologically inclined – oh hi there – you’ll know super moons are a big deal. We spoke to spiritual coach Gaia Chinniah about what the supermoon of July 3 means, and what you can do to harness its power.

Wait, WTF is happening?

Basically, a supermoon is when the moon appears bigger in the night sky. As the moon orbits around the earth, it does so in an ellipse, rather than a perfect circle – so sometimes it’s closer to Earth.

It’s the first of a few supermoons this year, but it’s shaping up to be the biggest and brightest. This one is a ‘Buck moon’ – the name orf the first offical full moon of the season.

Cool cool cool science is awesome, but what does it MEAN?

“This full moon is about releasing everything that has made you feel that you lack safety and security in life,” says Gaia. “If you feel insecure or unsafe at this time, it does not mean that you actually are. It is a full moon to help you get focused on what will bring you the safety you need.

“However, this one is a super moon and the first super moon since August 2022, which brings with it increased strength and potency. It is a rather special phenomenon right in the middle of the year. July is a time of re-evaluating and balancing things out and at the time of the super moon your leadership skills will be important, taking the bull by the horns to be able to make changes based on your priorities. You may have found as this year has gone by you have neglected certain things that need focus and structures in place for long-term sustainability.

“This super moon is called a full buck moon, representing the time of year when the antlers of a male deer are in full growth phase. The deer itself represents slowing down, being in the moment but to also bring to the forefront what is most important to you. Slowing down to really see and balance your home, career, health, spiritual and mental abundance. When you are abundant in all areas you are in the flow to be able to slow down and trust that your self-discipline is paying off. Where do you need to slow down and where do you need to pick up the pace?”

Full moons help you purge energy; this super moon will help you release any aimlessness, or indecision that you have been facing. When we stop we can see where we are and if we like where we are. You might find yourself walking away from certain things that you are not enjoying, including emotions and mindsets in order to represent who you want to be going forward.

Gaia adds, “This super moon will bring about the revealing of the truth that you need to see to feel safe that everything is working out for you even as things change and transform.”

Dancing in the Moonlight, then?

So you know astronomy and astrology, what you should you actually do?

First of all, get out and see the moon. There’s no risk to the naked eye, so pull up a chair and a cup of Milo, settle in, and appreciate a wonderful celestial phenomenon.

But if you’re keen to harness the unique energy, here are a few dos and don’ts:

  • DO sit down and get real with yourself. This is the perfect time to check in with yourself and your goals, values and dreams. You’ll be cosmically pushed towards resolutions and hard truths and forced to confront your true feelings, according to astrologists. Reflect on what’s happened, and what needs to happen next to further yourself in whatever journey you’re on right now.
  • DO moon bathe. It’s a simple process that is way less woo woo than it sounds. Just sit and either meditate or think in the moonlight about new beginnings and tying up loose ends, and moving forward.
  • DO burn stuff, but DON’T be like Rachel, Monica and Phoebe and set your apartment on fire. Light a candle, write down all you want to release, hold it close to your heart and then set slight, before dropping into something fireproof (for the love of God be careful).
  • DO visualise – it’s the perfect time to journal, meditate or vision board.
5 Times When “Friends” was Surprisingly Feminist – They Are Fearless

Gaia has the perfect ritual for your supermoon experience:

“Make yourself a warming and heart-opening hot mug of cacao, light a beautiful candle and some incense, play some gentle music and write down what you don’t want to carry anymore – handwritten note to yourself of your burdens to be released, and the acknowledgement of any resistance towards doing so. You may want to burn this note or cleanse the letter with the smoke of the incense. Then go outside after and silently or out loud speak to the Universe about the gateways you want help opening for the rest of the ytear. Express your gratitude for all that has come to your realisation at this time in your life.”
