What are the top winter 2026 fashions? At the start of each season as you dig back into your closet – particularly in winter, as you search for those warm layers – it can suddenly feel like you’ve got nothing to wear… or do you?! Two top fashion experts explain the top winter 2026 trends, and why they’re likely already in your wardrobe…
In fashion, a new season usually signals the urge to buy something new. But in a cost-of-living crisis, most of us aren’t tossing out last year’s clothes just yet.
Thankfully, winter 2026 is less about chasing fleeting micro-trends and more about nostalgia. Think grandmother’s jewellery box, denim classics and vintage trench coats.
The good news is you probably have everything you need to look stylish – so what’s worth pulling out of the wardrobe?
We asked experts celebrity stylist Tori Knowles, the mastermind behind Delta Goodrem’s gold Eurovision gown, and Natasha Halkett, the buying manager for womenswear at David Jones for their verdicts on this year’s trends.
Double denim is making a comeback. How are we modernising this for 2026?
NH: Denim-on-denim for 2026 feels refined and directional, with a focus on sculpted silhouettes rather than oversized styling. We’re seeing stronger shoulders, cinched waists and more structured shapes replacing relaxed denim shirting and boxy jackets.
Contrast washes are also key. Pairing darker rinse denim with lighter tones adds depth and dimension while keeping the look elevated.
TK: Contrast is everything. I love clashing washes and textures – something like a structured piece worn over something softer and more worn in.
For those wanting a flat shoe that isn’t a sneaker, how do you style a good pair of loafers?
NH: Loafers are becoming the go-to alternative to sneakers. They instantly elevate casual dressing, especially when paired with denim or relaxed tailoring.
To make the look more modern and playful, style them with coloured or textured socks, which adds personality while still feeling chic and considered.
TK: Don’t be scared of the sock situation. A chunky-knit sock, or even a sheer sock or stocking, is your best friend.
What else is dominating winter style right now?
NH: We’re seeing a strong emphasis on texture and craftsmanship this season, from fringing and suede to leather and tactile fabric finishes that add depth and interest to winter dressing.
It’s intentional simplicity. It shifts the focus back to your skin, jewellery, and outfit. I think it’s incredibly chic.
What’s one thing people should do more of when dressing for winter?
TK: Consciously re-wear. You do not need a whole new wardrobe every season. You need to look at what you already own with fresh eyes.
One strong brooch on a lapel completely transforms a look and adds that unique, personal feeling.
Pull things out, re-combine them and layer them differently. Winter is actually the best season for this because texture and layering do so much of the heavy lifting.
And the winter staple that will never date?
NH: A great pair of dark denim or classic rinse straight leg jeans will always be timeless – they have that effortless, model off-duty appeal that works season after season.
Paired with an oversized trench coat, it creates a look that feels polished, understated and endlessly wearable regardless of trends.
TK: A really fab coat tells people everything about your taste – and it doesn’t have to be new. Some of the most incredible coats I’ve seen on clients have been a vintage find or something pulled out of a box in storage.
