WHAT Is Black Friday?
Black Friday is basically just a day of GREAT shopping sales. It’s started to rise in popularity here in the last few years, but it has taken a while to reach our shores. It all started in the States where it happens the day after Thanksgiving. Essentially, people would hit the shops the day after Thanksgiving and the traffic would get so bad, they’d call it Black Friday.
And, it is pretty darn serious stuff in the States. Back in 2001 I was working in Los Angeles at the Century City mall and was rostered on for the day after Thanksgiving at Macy’s. I, having come from NZ, had NO idea that Black Friday was a thing and… well, it was one of the most stressful days of my life (and I have had a baby by emergency c-section). I got the bus to work and can confirm that Black Friday traffic is a thing – people literally camped out on the street.
Anyhoo, now countries all over the world get it on it, including NZ. Stats from Afterpay showed that last year, Kiwis spent more than ever on Black Friday, with orders up 31% year-on-year for the sales period.
They found the busiest time of all was noon on Friday 29 November 2024 (Black Friday), with shoppers also buying up large on Cyber Monday (up 28%). The most popular items last year appeared to be apparel and accessories (37.6%) followed by home and garden (9.4%) and electronics (7.9%).
It seems Kiwis really are making the most of Black Friday sales – so much, that it has shifted how we shop. It seems those days of panic buying on Christmas Eve, or even just throughout December are over for many Kiwis – with nearly two-thirds of Kiwis planning to complete their Christmas shopping before December even arrives.
Black Friday is perfect if you can plan ahead – if you’ve made a Christmas list, it’s the perfect time to get that gift for a bargain.
If you miss out though, you do get another crack at it, because now Cyber Monday is also a thing. This happens the Monday after Black Friday (so, Monday December 1 2025) and, as the name suggests, this is a sale specifically for making online purchases. Most stores allow you to make online purchases on Black Friday rather than just in-store, but, on Cyber Monday you’ll have to head online to grab the bargains).
As with any sales though, make sure you have a plan before November 29 if you’re thinking of partaking in Black Friday. JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS HEAVILY DISCOUNTED DOESN’T MEAN YOU NEED TO BUY IT. A great plan is to write a list of Christmas gifts you need and then any purchases you’ve been meaning to make. Then write yourself a budget. Then, go ahead and sign up to the email newsletters of the stores you wanna shop at and delete all the ones you don’t want to be tempted by at the end of the month?
