Ok, here’s the thing about living in Aotearoa: we’re spoiled rotten when it comes to nearby escapes, and yet somehow we still find ourselves defaulting to the same old itinerary: the same resort, the same beach, the same buffet breakfast (no judgement, there!). But what if we told you that some of the best ‘off the beaten track’ travel experiences are hiding inside the destinations you think you already know and love, and won’t cost you an arm and a leg to get to?

We asked the experts at Flight Centre, the people who spend their days matching Kiwis with their dream holidays, to spill on the close-to-home hidden gems they recommend again and again. Some are lesser-known corners of well-loved favourites, others are whole destinations flying a little under the radar. But all of them are within easy reach of Aotearoa, which, with winter well and truly upon us, feels like very useful information indeed!

The Cook Islands:

Why it’s a hidden gem: The Cook Islands are always high on my list. They might be a well-known island escape, but they still feel incredibly untouched. It never feels crowded and there’s this genuine, authentic local charm to it that’s hard to beat.

What to expect? A laid-back island lifestyle where everything slows down – in the best possible way. You can’t help but feel relaxed. You’ve got crystal-clear lagoons, lush green mountains, and beautiful nature everywhere you turn. It’s that perfect balance of relaxation, with lots to explore too.

You’ll love this if…You want somewhere that’s easy to get to but still feels really special and different.

Look forward to…Exploring local markets, fresh seafood, and cultural shows. Jumping on a bike or hiring a car and doing a full loop around Rarotonga in a day – it’s one of the best ways to see the island. And definitely don’t miss Aitutaki, whether it’s a day trip or an overnight stay – it’s home to some of the best snorkelling in the world! Plus, beachfront dining with your feet in the sand never gets old.

Here’s something to keep in mind… You’ll cross the date line, so you actually gain a day when you arrive, then lose it on the way home. And everything is in NZD which makes it super easy – no currency conversions or surprise costs.

Niue:

Why it’s a hidden gem… It’s one of the least-visited countries in the world, so it has this raw, untouched charm to it. You really feel like you’ve discovered somewhere special. Plus, it has some of the clearest water and best ocean experiences you’ll come across.

What to expect? It’s a destination built for adventure. From snorkelling and swimming to hiking and coastal exploring, there’s always something to do. With only around 1800 residents, it genuinely feels like your own private escape.

You’ll love this if… You’re into nature, love being in the water and want that feeling of truly switching off while still having plenty to explore.

Look forward to… Swimming with humpback whales in season (July–October), snorkelling in crystal-clear natural pools, exploring hidden caves and coastal tracks, and visiting local villages and experiencing true island life.

Something to keep in mind… Flights are only available once or twice a week, so plan accordingly. And you’ll definitely want to hire a car – public transport is limited, and having that freedom makes a big difference.

Rebekah, Travel Expert, Flight Centre Mairangi Bay- I’ve been with Flight Centre for ten years. I love cruising, but my favourite destination is Japan.

Tropical North Queensland:

Why it’s a hidden gem… North Queensland really does tick all the boxes for a tropical holiday – sunshine, beautiful beaches, world-class snorkelling and lush rainforest all in one place. There’s also plenty of great spots to eat, drink and unwind.

What to expect? Great beaches, crystal clear water, and the Great Barrier Reef right at your doorstep. It’s perfect for snorkelling and diving with marine life up there with the best in the world. Then inland, you’ve got the Daintree Rainforest – one of the oldest on the planet – so there’s just as much to explore beyond the coast.

There’s a wide range of accommodation, from laid-back apartments to luxury resorts, so you can tailor the trip to suit your budget and the kind of holiday you’re after.

You’ll love this if…You want a mix of everything – relaxing, getting out on the water, exploring nature, and ending your days somewhere with a great meal and a view.

Look forward to… Escaping the New Zealand winter for somewhere warm and sunny. It’s a world-class destination that still feels easy and familiar.

Something to keep in mind… If you can, try to avoid the summer months – the heat and humidity can be intense, and it’s cyclone season. Winter or shoulder season is ideal. If you’ve got the time, it’s worth adding a couple of extra days in Brisbane or Sydney before or after your trip – for a bit of shopping or city time.

Adelaide:

Why it’s a hidden gem… Adelaide doesn’t overwhelm – and that’s exactly its charm. It’s relaxed, packed with great food and wine, beautiful beaches and scenery, and a relaxed pace that’s increasingly hard to find in a city holiday.”

What to expect? Adelaide is compact and easy to explore. It has a great laneway bar scene, bustling markets, countless festivals and some of Australia’s best wine regions all within easy reach of the city centre.

You’ll love this… If you’re a food and wine lover who wants a proper city break without the chaos – and you love the idea of swapping the crowds for wildlife, nature and open spaces.

Look forward to… Wine tasting in the Barossa, a day trip to Kangaroo Island or the charming Hahndorf village, and lazy afternoons on Glenelg beach.

Something to keep in mind… Hire a car if you can. Some of Adelaide’s best experiences sit just outside the city – and it’s great being able to explore at your own pace. It’s well worth it.

Gianfranco, Travel Expert, Flight Centre Lambton Quay – I’ve been with Flight Centre for eight years. Japan and Italy would have to be my favourite destinations.

Yasawa Islands, Fiji

Why it’s a hidden gem… The Yasawas feel untouched and secluded. You’ve got these beautifully clear, turquoise waters and that sense of being just a little off the radar that makes it so special.

What can you expect? White sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, and that laid-back island lifestyle. It’s all about slowing down, with amazing snorkelling and some of the best sunsets you’ll see.

You’ll love this if… You’re into barefoot luxury, island hopping, and switching off completely.

Look forward to… Exploring stunning coral reefs, visiting friendly local villages, and soaking up endless ocean views.

Something to keep in mind… Getting there involves a boat or small plane transfer, which does add to the cost – but is part of what makes the Yasawas so special and remote. If you fancy a really unique experience, there are also helicopter transfers.

Annalia, Travel Expert, Flight Centre Riccarton – I’ve been with Flight Centre just over eight years. Fiji is one of my go-to holiday destinations to relax and unwind. I also love Sri Lanka with its incredible variety.

Consider yourself inspired the next time the group chat starts buzzing about an escape. Whether it’s whales in Niue, wine in the Barossa or your feet in the sand in Raro, the experts at Flight Centre can sort the rest (flights, transfers, that all-important room with a view), so all you have to do is pack!
