Has Steve Toussaint been playing a legendary seafarer on the acclaimed fantasy TV series House of the Dragon, whilst secretly suffering from seasickness?! We sat down with Steve in NZ to hear all about his experiences on the hit show, his feelings about the fantasy genre, the world – and what Lord Corlys might post on Instagram if he had an account…
Last week HBO Max launched here in NZ and to mark the occasion, one of the stars of the hit show House of the Dragon, Steve Toussaint visited our shores to kick things off.
For those of you not too familiar with the fantasy genre, House of the Dragon is a big deal. The juggernaut show is the prequel to a little old show you may have heard of – Game of Thrones, and is set about 200 years before the events of that series. Steve Toussaint – a British actor and writer who was already well known in the UK for his performance on the crime drama The Knock – plays Lord Corlys Velaryon, a famed seafarer widely known as “The Sea Snake”.
In real life, Steve is a wonderful, hilarious and genuine man – who I was shocked, SHOCKED to discover is 61 years old.
Steve and I had a wonderful chat about the show – particularly around the fantasy genre and how wonderful it is as a tool to escape this increasingly stressful world we live in. But, on the other hand, there’s also the fact we can never fully escape real life as so many of the central threads that run through this show are exactly what we’re looking at in today’s world: power, and the thirst for it.
Steve chatted about everything from #metoo to whether he’s secretly been suffering from seasickness the entire time he’s been playing a legendary seafarer. Oh, and what we might expect from Lord Corlys if he were on Instagram. You can check it all out below:
(See what I mean?! How is this man 61?!)
You can watch Steve now on House of the Dragon available on HBO Max.
