Here’s where you should go in Asia! (And click here for our previous editions!)
If you’re at all in tune with what’s popping in the travel world, you’ll know that the continent of Asia is having a real *moment*, with so many of its countries on must-visit in 2025 lists.
Why? Simply, it’s a cheaper option than a European gallivant or an American roadie, with huge value to be found across places such as Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Singapore.
But also, in this post-Covid era, heaps of us are craving a bit of a culture change and adventure – and oosh, does Asia deliver that or what!
Tripadvisor named three Asian cities – Osaka, Kyoto and Seoul – in its top 10 trending destinations for 2025 (Auckland was in there too!) while Osaka also made Lonely Planet’s top 30 Best in Travel list.
While Japan might be the shining star right now, there’s increased interest in lots of other South and East Asian countries, all of which offer something a little different. How do you decide which one to travel to? Oh you best believe we did a mag-style quiz because in times of indecisiveness, where better to turn to than an old Cosmo that always had a banger of a quiz, our 80s and 90s brains say!?
We’ve broken down Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore and Bali below, and if you still can’t figure out which Asian country is your perfect travel match, take our quiz!
JAPAN: THE THOUGHTFUL BUT EXCITING MINIMALIST WHO’S CALM AMONGST CHAOS

You are: Intentional, sensitive, calm in the chaos
You’re craving: A sense of peace, awe, and maybe a reminder of the beauty in small things – with a side of big city life and meaningful, purpose-driven chaos
You’ll get: Stillness, inspiration, creativity, purpose and spiritual clarity
Japan is the destination equivalent of exhaling. It’s for people who need a break from noise, by either heading up into the alps for onsen-soaking or skiing, or becoming prt of the noise in big cities like Toyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Maybe you’re burnt out, maybe you’re creatively blocked, or maybe you just want a trip that feels… meaningful.
In Japan, everything has purpose. The tea ceremony teaches presence. The architecture teaches balance. Even the convenience store egg sandwich will teach you something about simplicity done well!
Go here if: You’re a tech lover, a foodie or a culture buff, and you want your holiday to recharge you on a soul level. You’ll come back with clearer thoughts, better habits, and a newfound love for vending machines!
Flight Centre’s best tips for Japan:
Timing is everything! The spring Sakura (Cherry blossoms) that line Japan’s parks and gardens are truly stunning and draw visitors from around the world. The blooming season is typically from late March to early April. However, if you want to avoid the crowds, Autumn (September to November) is also a great time to visit, and is just as beautiful.
For those with kids, Air NZ has direct flights which travel overnight. This means (hopefully…) the family can sleep through the bulk of the air travel and arrive in Japan ready to go.
Tokyo is also the home of the only DisneySea as well as Disneyland Tokyo. These resorts are cheaper than their equivalents overseas but are notorious for long lines. Download the app and plan your day at Disney, purchasing lightning passes to avoid lines. A good tip is to go early or stay late to get the best chance of shorter lines. Another option is to stay at one of the resorts on-site, which can get you access before the park opens to the general public. Regardless, we recommend staying local in the area as it is a 40-minute trip back to Tokyo.
Relinquish your inner planner and leave a few days free to wander – you’re guaranteed to find things you didn’t even know existed!
Make sure you prebook your bullet train journeys, so you ensure to get seats. You can also reserve space for luggage. Or better yet, for those wanting to travel light, you can ship your luggage to your next hotel – game changer!
SOUTH KOREA: THE TRENDSETTER WHO LOVES AN INSTAGRAM MOMENT BUT STILL WITH THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

You are: Polished, fast-paced, always ahead of the curve
You’re craving: A hyper-modern escape where everything’s curated, cool, and Instagram-ready – and just a little bit quirky!
You’ll get: Energy, innovation, and a little main character magic
If your idea of a holiday involves ticking off rooftop bars, boutique skincare shopping, and indulging in food that’s equal parts spicy and satisfying, then Annyeonghaseyo! – South Korea is your place. SK is having a real moment right now as a slightly cooler, trendier and off-beat cousin to Japan – in fact, many Kiwis choose to tick off both in the same trip.
Seoul, with its K-pop glam and fashion-forward buzz, gives you that dopamine hit of a city that moves fast and has a point to prove. You’ll explore a culture that’s deeply proud of its traditions (temple stays! calligraphy classes! ancient palaces!) yet completely plugged into the future (AI cafes and robot baristas? Of course). Korean culture has permeated the world in recent years thanks to music and beauty trends, and it’s the place to go if you want to be in the centre of everything up-and-coming.
Go here if: You want your holiday to be stylish, stimulating, and story-worthy. You’ll return feeling inspired, a little cooler than when you left, and probably with seven(teen?) new sheet masks. It’s the perfect place for a culture queen, trendsetter and also digital nomads.
Flight Centre’s best tips for South Korea:
Chat to us about your entry requirements to South Korea at time of booking as even though you may be able to get through visa-free, you do need to complete a Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation, which needs to be done at least 72 hours before your flight – it’s not a job for on the plane!
South Korea and Seoul are vibrant with a strong local pop culture. If you really want to immerse yourself, look for local K-Pop events while you are there. You’ll experience the hype and you may even get hooked!
South Korea has an incredible public transport system, and it is a very cost-effective way of seeing major city centres. They have plenty of english translations to help you find your way, and you can travel using a T-Money card, which you can get from vending machines at the subway.
Mind your manners, and make sure you are aware of local customs. For instance, you may be asked to take your shoes off before entering some restaurants, temples and private homes.
South Korea is famous for its skincare. Consider packing light and picking up some essentials while you are there, it tends to be high quality and more affordable. They even have their own world-famous skincare routine, which you’ll be able to learn about in one of their local beauty stores.
VIETNAM: THE WILD ROMANTIC THAT’S A LITTLE ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES BUT WITH A HEART OF GOLD

You are: Curious, untamed and full of big feelings that need somewhere to go!
You’re craving: Connection, unpredictability, and something that moves and inspires you
You’ll get: Raw beauty, real adventure, and genuine encounters with incredible people (and also, incredible food!)
If you feel most alive when you’re off-script – eating things you can’t pronounce, hopping on a stranger’s motorbike, getting caught in a rainstorm and loving it – then Vietnam is very much your match.
This is a country of contrasts: lush rice fields and gritty cities, ancient temples and high-rise cafes, slow moments and relentless energy. You’ll feel it all – the warmth of the people, the richness of the history, the salt on your skin after a day on a fishing boat. If you’re the kind of gal who likes a holiday with a lot of variety, then this is the place for you.
Go here if: You want your holiday to change your perspective, challenge your senses, and remind you that magic still exists in the unexpected. Vietnam is great if you’re on a budget, if you love food and you love adventure!
Flight Centre’s best tips for Vietnam:
The best time to visit Vietnam is between November and April, making it a great destination for the office shut down period or school holidays. The weather is mild and dry then, so less likely to face heavy rain and the temperatures are comfortable for everyone.
For experiences on the ground, book a boat trip along the world-famous Mekong river to see the floating market. A trip to Vietnam isn’t complete without a visit to Ha long Bay, which packs a punch with experiences. Thien Cung Cave is a must-see at Ha Long Bay, which is a limestone cave formation which you can explore with a tour guide.
It can be expensive to travel internally in Vietnam, a sleeper train is a great alternative. There is a few operating, and they tend to stick to routes travelling north and south. So, if you are wanting to explore this option, look at the train itineraries first to plan your trip around destinations it visits.
Vietnam is known for its beauty and its food. Brush up on your Vietnamese favourites and let your appetite guide you. Food can be regional specific, with even towns having their own flavours or dishes that they pride themselves on. Don’t be afraid to try something new and ask for the local favourite.
SINGAPORE: THE SLEEK, SMART CITY THAT’S SECRETLY A LITTLE BIT SPICY

You are: Curious, stylish, and low-key boujee
You’re craving: Culture, cool streets, and cocktails with a view
You’ll get: Michelin eats, rooftop beats, and a city that actually runs on time
Singapore is like that effortlessly chic friend who’s always seems to have their s**t together (we all have one!) One minute you’re wandering around a futuristic garden that glows after dark, the next you’re slurping laksa at a hawker centre like a local. It’s clean, green, and gloriously multicultural (and yes, it really is that efficient.)
There’s something about Singapore that makes you feel like your life is very much together, even if you’re just here for a long weekend. It’s a city built on ambition and drive and it makes you feel excited just by walking around – but don’t be fooled: behind the shiny surface is a bold, creative soul that knows how to let loose (hello, speakeasies and Sentosa beach clubs).
You’ll leave with your camera roll full, your belly fuller, and your standards for public transport permanently ruined.
Go here if: You want your holiday to feel like a first-class upgrade – polished, energising, and just the right amount of luxe. Perfect for solo adventurers, foodie travellers, and city lovers with a soft spot for secret gardens.
Flight Centre’s best tips for Singapore:
The world is really your oyster with Singapore, from food to shopping, and incredible experiences. When picking accommodation, have a think about what type of holiday you are wanting. If you’d like the bright lights, tourist experience, Sentosa Island is a haven of activity. Staying near Orchard road would give you plenty of access to the best of the best when it comes to shopping. For a vibrant experience, Little India and Chinatown are always bustling with the best culture and food experiences. Of course, if budget allows, the Marina Bay Sands is hard to turn down.
Singapore is a really easy place to travel to, with English translations on signs and a solid public transport system called the MRT. This will get you straight from Changi Airport (one of the best airports in the world) into the city centre and around to all major attractions.
Singapore is famous for its cuisine, in particular their Hawker Centres which are their take on a food market. Dotted around Singapore, Hawker centres offer a variety of cuisines at good prices, just be mindful that food tends to run spicy in Singapore so ask for mild if you need it!
BALI: THE ONE WHO ALWAYS PUNCHES ABOVE THEIR WEIGHT BUT IS A LITTLE DEEPER THAN YOU MIGHT GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR (THE SOUL SEEKER)

You are: Reflective, spiritual, tuned into intuition
You’re craving: Space to think, heal, and maybe realign with yourself
You’ll get: Transformation, nature, and deep inner stillness
Sometimes, what you really need from a holiday isn’t a packed itinerary, it’s a whole reset, especially in *these times*. Nowhere does this better than Bali – it’s not just a destination; it’s a vibe shift.
Of course there are beach clubs and sunsets and smoothies and Bintangs (all SUPER fun!). But there’s also daily rituals, rice field walks, cacao ceremonies and real community. Whether you’re surfing in Canggu, meditating in Ubud, or journaling in a jungle hut, you’ll feel the pull back to yourself.
Indonesia, with its blend of spirituality and sensuality, ancient traditions and modern wellness, is fab if you need to disrupt your everyday way of thinking, being and acting.
Go here if: You want your holiday to feel like a beautiful pause or intentional disruptor – where the real souvenirs are clarity, connection (ok fine maybe a few crystal bracelets). It’s where you want to be if you’re remote working, love a bit of yoga and wellness or you love a beach day!
Flight Centre’s best tips for Bali:
A quick tip is to apply for your Visa on Arrival (VoA) or e-VoA online to save time at the airport. The airport is busy, with no real ‘down’ time, so anything that makes that process more efficient is a must!
You can use ride-sharing apps like Gojek for getting around. Download ahead of time so you can get familiar with each one, and it’ll make it easy to get from point A to point B.
For those seeking a combo of lush landscapes and vibrant experiences, Ubud is your friend. It’s popular for activities like Tegallalang Rice Terraces (great for taking photos!) and Campuhan Ridge Walk.
