JW Marriott Auckland Hotel Review: It’s Fancy, It’s Pricey… But WOW. I Stayed in a Champagne-Themed Room, Here’s What It Was Like

We check in and review the JW Marriott Auckland – and experience more than one surprise!

When you stay at a five-star hotel, I believe you are firmly – firmly – justified in expecting almost the entire world in your stay, because more often than not, the hotel has cleared out almost your entire bank account.

Luxury doesn’t come cheap with hotels, so when you shell out the money, you want to be damn sure every dollar is worth it, especially in *this economy*.

I will be very clear – what I am about to review here is top-tier luxe, baby, with a top-tier price point. It’s for very fancy celebrations, special nights, or presents that all of the family has chipped in for, but holy hell, what a night you’ll have.

Let’s get into exactly what staying in the Maison Ruinart Suite at Auckland’s JW Marriott is all about – and if it’s really worth the price point.

What is the Maison Ruinart Suite?

The Marriott has teamed up Maison Ruinart, the world’s oldest Champagne house, for the ultimate seasonal escape with a very opulent new offering a limited-edition, spring-themed luxury suite.

This one-of-a-kind suite transforms the Ambassador Suite into a breathtaking spring oasis, blooming with Ruinart-themed florals, custom rare/vintage Ruinart menus, welcome champagne and amenities, and refined touches designed to enchant. This exclusive package includes a one-night stay in the Ambassador Suite – transformed into a Ruinart themed spring oasis.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, romantic getaway or private event, this immersive experience is made for memorable moments and standout special occasion bookings.

From $1,888 (we know we know but stay with us) the Ruinart Spring Suite package includes:

·       A one-night stay in the Ambassador Suite, our luxury specialty suite for 2

·       A bottle of Ruinart Champagne chilled and waiting on arrival

·       A bespoke multi-course dinner menu paired with rare Ruinart cuvées

·       Immersive spring theming, floral installations, and bespoke seasonal amenities

·       Welcome treats, breakfast for two, valet parking, and a relaxed 1pm late check out

You also have access to the JW Marriott’s new executive lounge, for free drinks and snacks which does make you feel quite special because it’s like having a little Koru lounge in the hotel and that’s always fun,

So, you are getting quite a lot of things for your moolah (there’s also a pool, sauna and gym to experience, too).

As you’d expect, the room is gorgeous. Gorgeous. When we visited, the suite had been morphed into a kind of Ruinart x Christmas theme, which added to the festive fun, and we were stunned when a gorgeous hotel walker rolled a Champagne and oysters trolley into the room because in what universe does this happen.

One of the hotel’s managers did tell me that they are planning new suite themes soon, too – and some at lower price points, to ensure more people can enjoy the special vibes of a themed suite.

Bathrooms feel spa-level – marble walls, premium toiletries, and fixtures that make you want to hang out in the tub – and the whole room feels like it’s been put together to make unwinding effortless.

What’s the vibe of JW Marriott Auckland?

I’m not much of a gold gilt and chandelier kind of gal, and nor, apparently, is most of New Zealand. When we think of luxury, nature comes to mind first, rather than flash, and it’s a philospophy the JW Marriott seems to share. I mean sure, the three -piece soft jazz band playing in the lobby might be a slight nod to fancy, but the rest of the hotel is – don’t get me wrong, stunning – but welcoming and relaxing.

Why would you stay at JW Marriott

If you’re after a “treat- yo-self” kind of stay – whether for a birthday, romantic getaway, or just because you’re done adulting for a moment – JW Marriott hits that spot. It’s central enough that you’re right near the action in Auckland, yet refined enough that you don’t feel like you’re crashing at a busy backpacker spot.

It also caters to wellness-inclined souls – rooms come with yoga mats, there’s a full-on Wellness Centre with pool, sauna and more.

What about food and drink?

Food-wise, this place isn’t an afterthought. There’s a few solid in-house dining options such as Trivet, which opened last year, but the standout for me is the new Kureta, the hotel’s Japanese-inspired teppan / modern omakase-style spot.

Visiting Kureta feels like hopping on a mini getaway to Japan (well to be fair I’ve never been but this is what I imagine fancy Japan to be) – dim lighting, open-kitchen theatrics, and food cooked in front of you with serious finesse. Attention to detail, thoughtful plating and clean flavours make it elevated and a true experience, which included wine and sake matches (that was a journey).

The vibe is intimate, calm and special, perfect for a date night or quiet celebratory dinner rather than a loud party. It doesn’t lean into stereotypical teppanyaki showmanship (no flipping knives or eggs in your bowl), but the culinary skill and ambience more than make up for that.

The lobby bar Forum is also gorgeous, with awesome staff and a great selection. They also offer high tea from Friday through to Sunday which I have done on a previous visit, and it’s delectable.

Final thoughts:

If you want a stay in Auckland that feels less tourist-hostel, more grown-up indulgence, JW Marriott Auckland delivers. The rooms are calming and elegant, the little luxuries matter, and there’s a strong sense that someone designed this place to help you unwind properly.

The Maison Ruinart Suite (or whatever seasonal suite is on offer when you go) is a great excuse to treat yourself – or impress someone – without going totally over-the-top tacky. And if you get hungry, slipping downstairs to Kureta for dinner turns a hotel stay into a small getaway.

It’s not cheap, but if you want to feel a bit spoiled, relaxed, and enjoy some seriously good food – JW Marriott is a solid bet.
