So You’ve Seen the Series – Now Read the Book! The Best Novels That Have Inspired Telly’s Biggest Hits

Capsule x HarperCollins

If you’re anything like us, if you love watching the biggest show or movie on the screen and then following up with a deep dive into the original book! Here are four of the hottest new on-screen hits that have their origins on the page

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

Currently number one on Neflix, this psychological thriller has audiences HOOKED across the world – but you’ll find so much more within the pages of the original novel.

So here’s the premise: What if the person you thought you knew best turned out to be someone you never knew at all? Andrea Oliver’s mother, Laura, is the perfect small-town mum. But when Andrea is caught in a random violent attack at a shopping mall, Laura intervenes and acts in a way that is unrecognisable to her daughter. It’s like Laura is a completely different person – and that’s because she was. Thirty years ago. Before Andrea. Before Belle Isle.

As elements of the past return and put them both in danger, Andrea is left to piece together Laura’s former identity and discover the truth – for better or worse – about her mother. Is the gentle, loving woman who raised her also a violent killer?

Trust us – this is one you won’t be able to put down! We’ve previously featured Karin Slaughter’s False Witness for our book club and the verdict was unanimous. These books are INCREDIBLE (and if you’re a fan of these, you’ll also be able to pick up Andrea’s journey in Girl, Forgotten when it’s released on June 22.

Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

Ok so the fact that this one was written by Agatha Christie, it’s a bit of a giveaway that this book hasn’t just been released – in fact it hails back to 1937 – but a blockbuster movie, directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh and starring Russell Brand, Dawn French, Gal Gadot and Jennifer Saunders, among MANY others.

The novel is a sequel to the famed Murder on the Orient Express, and features Christie’s beloved character, detective Hercule Poirot, who embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of her most famous mysteries.

The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life.

Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

A sweeping mystery of love, jealousy, and betrayal, Death on the Nile is one of Christie’s most legendary and timeless works.

The Weekend Away by Sarah Alderson

Now a Netflix Original Movie starring Gossip Girls‘ Leighton Meester, this novel’s premise is simple – Miles from home. Trust no one. Suspect everyone.

Orla and Kate have been best friends forever. Together they’ve faced it all – be it Orla’s struggles as a new mother or Kate’s messy divorce. And whatever else happens in their lives, they can always look forward to their annual weekend away.

This year, they’re off to Lisbon: the perfect flat, the perfect view, the perfect itinerary. And what better way to kick things off in style than with the perfect night out?

But when Orla wakes up the next morning, Kate is gone. Brushed off by the police and with only a fuzzy memory of the night’s events, Orla is her friend’s only hope. As she frantically retraces their steps, Orla makes a series of shattering discoveries that threaten everything she holds dear. Because while Lisbon holds the secret of what happened that night, the truth may lie closer to home…

Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan

Coming to Netflix next month, this twisty scandal demonstrates the fact that some people’s secrets are darker than others.

Sophie Whitehouse has a lovely home, two adorable children, and a handsome, successful husband. In other words, she has the “perfect” life. But everything changes the night her husband James comes home and confesses an indiscretion. Suddenly, her neat, ordered world is turned upside down. Did she ever really know the man she married?

And, as it turns out, James’s revelation is just the tip of the iceberg. He stands accused of a terrible crime. But, the truth is even more shocking than anyone ever could have thought. Is James the guilty perpetrator or an innocent victim of a toxic agenda?

In this riveting story of love, revenge, and deception, no one’s motives are pure, but some people’s secrets are much darker than others.
