TWENTY TWENTY THRIVE: The *Actually* Useful Self-Care Edition – the 10 Small Things We Do to Keep Ourselves Sane, Satisfied and Ready for Anything (Plus, Have We Found the Ultimate Self-Care Gadget?)

Samsung s25 Post

Let's be friends!

The books we're reading, the vibrators we're using, the rants we're having and more in our weekly EDM.

Call it manifestation, call it good vibes, call it unashamed naivety, we, the co-founders of Capsule are determined that this year will, in fact, be our year. Welcome to Twenty Twenty Thrive – our guide to living our best lives! This edition, we delve into practical ways to get as much self-care into our daily lives as possible!

Capsule x Samsung

Look, we are very aware that some of the last few years have been… suboptimal at best. And yes, sure, there are things going on in the world right now that make you want to reach for the stress wine you keep hidden in the pantry behind the wholemeal flour.

But here at Capsule, we know there are many things that we cannot control and that focusing on those only makes us feel crazier. So, for this year, we’ve decided that we are instead going to focus on the things we
CAN to help us achieve our ultimate goal – simple, unfiltered happiness and contentment (IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK).

So here is
TWENTY TWENTY THRIVE. We’ve joined up with our pals at Samsung to bring you stories of pure joy and happiness, interspersed with actually helpful advice and tips on how to make this the best year yet. We’ll be focusing on themes like connection, health and self-care with real stories and real experts offering their sage advice and knowledge and, in true Capsule form, we’ll be (over)sharing our own experiences along the way.

We know that we’ve harped on about self-care ever since we first began Capsule – but it’s because, although all of us know how important it is, it’s always something that gets tackled last. The house, the kids, the job, the family – it’s a LOT. But, if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that rest IS NOT A REWARD. It’s a necessity.

As much as we’d all love to schedule facials and take ourselves out for shopping days, the reality is that self-care can be hard to fit into daily life.

But, it doesn’t have to be – with a few little adjustments in your day-to-day life, we can begin tackling self-care in an actually helpful, productive and easier way that’ll have you trucking along organised, happy and calm (ah, the dream!). We tasked ourselves over the course of a few weeks to integrate as many simple self-care aids into our lives as we can to see what would happen, and we’ve come up with the top 10 that we think genuinely work.

And, to really help the self-care experiment he Capsule team have been testing out what *just might* be the best, most helpful little gadget for our self-care journey – the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+, to really enhance our new, peaceful, productive era (that’s right, we’ve already called it!).

10. It’s boring but it’s VITAL – hydrate, queens!

Yes yes we know, everyone bangs on about hydration but it’s because everyone isn’t wrong – a hydrated gal is a happy gal. Your skin, your brain, your mood and your overall vibe will thank you. If you struggle with this like we do (who remembers off their own bat to drink two litres of water a day!?) then the trick is to make it easy and make it cute (life motto!?). Your fav bottle, cute carafe or glass will be on high rotation, and make it more interesting by adding berries, lemon or other natural flavouring (Capsule’s Kelly swears by popping a blood orange teabag into cold water).

9. Take yourself on a solo date

Peace and quiet really does seem like a luxury, so lean into some main character energy and take yourself for some ‘you-time’. Excellent company, indeed! We gave this a go – with options ranging from solo dinner dates (hotel restaurants are great for this, because no one wonders why you’re dining alone!), long walks with podcasts, or our favourite café with our Galaxy Tab S10+ and a few eps of our favourite show.

8. Do a digital declutter

There’s no better feeling than feeling like you have your shit together – even when you don’t! – and a digital detox is the first step. It’s just like spring cleaning your brain – instantly calming and suuuuper satisfying. Go through your phone and delete any apps you don’t use, sort through your notes app, and manage your subscriptions so you’re not paying for stuff you don’t need or use .

7. Reclaim and romanticise your evenings

The end of the day can be an absolute chaos bomb – but once the kids are asleep, dinner has been done and there’s a precious hour or two before bed, use it to recharge your brain with whatever relaxes you the most. Light a good candle, grab a brew or a glass, lower the lights and enjoy a good playlist, podcast or book before you. Head to bed. I [Kelly] tried this for a solid week with a new book (I’ve given in and went for The Let Them Theory which, I will admit, is fabulous) with my Galaxy Tab S10+ in bedtime mode. It reduces blue light and eye strain so it helps to promote sleep, which I need a LOT more of!

6. Move your body (but like, in a fun way, not a workout video way)

You’re at home gal, let your weird side out and dance like a weirdo when you’re making dinner, vacuuming or tidying up. I don’t know how or why or look, even if it’s a good idea on balance because you’ll probably embarrass anyone around but to hell with it – it’s fun to be free, and allows you to release any tension and worry.

5. A DIY spa moment is almost as good as the real thing (and so much easier to fit in)

Nothing says ‘I’m taking care of myself’ like smearing on a face mask while eating half a block of Whittakers in the bath. Lock the door, use the good bubble bath you save for ‘special occasions’ and pull out any of the hair or body treatments you shove at the back of the bathroom cabinet, and enjoy. If you’re a gal who loves to watch a show or two in the bath, the Galaxy Tab S10+ is only bloody WATERPROOF, so there’s one perpetual worry gone already!

4. Journal like a cool kid

If you’re a visual learner or you need to get out what’s in your head, you’ll love using your tablet as your diary (lockable notes guys, lockable notes!). If you’re not a word gal, use it to doddle or sketch out ideas or plans with the S Pen. Journalising has been proven to boost mental clarity, reduce anxiety and improve your mood. I’m not so into the journaling myself, but I do love to-do lists – when it’s out of my brain, I don’t have to worry about forgetting anything. I like to have the next day’s list done, so I can turn my brain off as much as possible!

3. Screen time, but make it intentional

Doom scrolling isn’t good for anyone – and somehow we’ve all got into multi-screen habits where we’re constantly overstimulated and distracted, but not taking in, well, pretty much anything. Put down the phone and the apps, and pop on your favourite show or move and really  watch it, without distractions or social media notifications. On that note…

2. No notifications, no distractions – just productivity (or relaxation!).

If it feels indulgent for you to only focus on one thing at a time, you miiight just be a little overstimulated. Women are very good at multi-tasking, it’s true – but our brains aren’t designed to have a millions tabs open and running in perpetuity. Turn on ‘Do Not Disturb’ and schedule moments to check your phone, your emails and your messages. Your time is sacred – don’t let it be invaded constantly!

1. Schedule a weekly ‘self-care’ hour

Ok guys, this is the golden rule. If it’s not scheduled, it won’t happen – we all know it to be true! Kiwi families live and die by their calendars. Don’t leave yourself off! Block out at least one hour that’s just yours – no chores, or jobs, or appointments. Just you, and whatever your version of peace looks like. Guard your hour fiercely, and it’ll become an easy non-negotiable you’ll be able to incorporate every week.

Happy self-care, queens!
