After weeks, months, years of speculation Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have tied the knot in a star-studded mega ceremony in New York. So… what do we know definitely happened? Who did they invite? Who were some surprise snubs? Who did Taylor pick to be her bridesmaids? What did she wear?!? We’ve got all the latest details below…
The Date
Taylor and Travis were married in a ceremony that kicked off at 4pm on July 3 (that’s July 4 in NZ).
Really, we should have always been able to pick that it would be around Independence Day that Taylor would get married. It’s always been a holiday when she has gone big. Remember the OTT water slides and celebrations of the years past? Remember this one from 2016?!
That year was also when she was dating Tom Hiddleston and he was photographed frolicking around in the water wearing a I Heart TS T-shirt. NEVER FORGET
Independence Day is a big deal for Miss Americana – she’s never let it go by without hosting a big party, so it’s only fitting that on its eve, she had her big day.
Plus, it seems the date is of extra special significance to the pair who met in early July three years ago for the very first time.
The Venue
The pair tied the knot at legendary venue, Madison Square Gardens, where Taylor has played many a sold out show. But, when news started to leak that MSG was likely the venue, at first it left many confused: wouldn’t Taylor want to find a secluded, private spot to get married, rather than right in the thick of things in New York City? It might sound counter-intuitive, but it turns out that despite it’s location, MSG is one of the easiest places to keep an event under wraps. Unlike a beach front property or country club, MSG is a completely enclosed environment. There are no public facing windows – not a chance for a photographer to get even a glimpse of what is happening inside. This is a venue that has held so, so many events and security is a well-oiled machine. If Taylor and Travis wanted a big wedding, this was a venue that was up for the challenge.
When you’re a billionaire, there are also plenty of ways to build your own dream environment inside a giant stadium. There’s been lots of speculation that a fairytale castle was erected inside – with other different zones created within the stadium. Boxes labelled “Garden Party” and “Mirror Ball” were seen being loaded into the venue in the days leading up to the event.
The streets around MSG were closed off from the day before, with the New York tax payer picking up the bill for the New York Police Department’s role in the event, which is estimated to exceed US$160,000. Her rep released a statement the day before the wedding saying that Taylor and Travis had made $26million in donations to a variety of different charities, including Feeding America, the ASPCA and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
The Dress
Shortly after the pair said I Do, Taylor’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine, released a statement giving us lots of details about what went on at MSG.
“The bride and groom’s wedding ceremony looks have been created by Christian Dior Haute Couture. They are designed by Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director of Dior Women’s, Men’s and Haute Couture Collections, in close collaboration with the Bride and Groom,” her statement read.
“This is the designer’s first couture wedding dress for a world-renowned celebrity. Their shoes were custom made by Christian Louboutin and the bride wore Cartier jewelry.”
The Celebrant
THE biggest surprise of the day was who ended up marrying the pair – a very left-field choice of… Adam Sandler?!
“The ceremony joined both families together and was officiated by friend Adam Sandler,” Swift’s rep said in a statement.
It seems Adam met Taylor when he took his two daughters – big time Swifties, Sunny and Sadie – to the premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film. It seems Sunny and Sadie aren’t the only Swifties in the family though. “There’s not a word my kids don’t know,” he said. “I know them too, by the way. But they know them inside and out.”
A few months later, on an episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend he said that Taylor is one of the few celebrities who leaves him starstruck.
“You know what, Taylor Swift, because what she means to my kids, I get a little jumpy. Just ’cause I don’t wanna blow it for my kids,” he said. “So I’m a little like, ‘Taylor, Taylor,’ like I talk a little too loud or something. I don’t stay as cool as I can.”
Then, Adam reached out to Travis to see if he’d be in his film, Happy Gilmore 2.
“[My daughters] love Taylor, I love Taylor. Travis is just nice enough. He wanted to do something, so we wrote something for Travis. And when he said yes, my girls were very excited, including my wife. Everybody loves him,” he told Extra.
He also told Entertainment Tonight that he couldn’t speak more highly of Travis.
“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell. He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
The Wedding Party
One of the most talked about and speculated aspects of the wedding in the weeks leading up to the big day was who might be standing alongside the bride and groom. In the end, the wedding party was a lot tighter than predicted.
“Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honour and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man,” Swift’s rep said.
The Guest List
Now this has been an interesting part of the whole spectacle. With an estimated guest list of 1,000, it seems half of Hollywood has been invited, with many saying the wedding has more celebrities than the MET Gala.
Some of the big questions leading up to the day have now been answered though: Would Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles be invited/in attendance. Harry is now engaged to one of Taylor’s close friends, Zoe Kravitz. (As a side note, you need to watch this clip of Zoe on Late Night with Seth Meyers where she tells the story of escaping to Taylor Swift’s Los Angeles home, after Taylor offered it up to her during the devastating wild fires in January last year. Zoe packed up what she could and headed to the home along with her mum, Lisa Bonet. But, after their two week stay, as they packed to leave, Lisa suddenly realised that her pet Burmese python was missing… Watch it here). With Zoe surely invited to the wedding… would Harry come too?
In the end, Zoe went solo – Harry is in the middle of a 12-night series of concerts in London. It seems that on the July 3 concert though, he did give a subtle nod to Taylor, singing his 2017 hit “Two Ghosts,” a ballad chronicling his 2013 breakup with her.
There was also a big question mark around whether Taylor’s old bestie Karlie Kloss would be in attendance. The two seemed to have fallen out – the rumour was that it was over Karlie continuing a friendship with Scooter Braun after the whole music ‘masters’ debacle. Scooter also managed Karlie’s career. There were also questions as to whether Karlie marrying Joshua Kushner (yes, Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s husband!) caused friction (there’s the political side of things, and the fact that Joshua is an investor in Ithaca Holdings, the company Scooter used to purchase Taylor’s master recordings in 2019). It seems that’s water under the bridge though, as Karlie was seen making her way to the wedding in a fluid gold dress.
- Perhaps the biggest question on the guest list was whether Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds would be invited. Blake and Taylor were tight – remember how many different videos there were of them at the Superbowl?
- Well, it seems the duo really have fallen out lately (it’s rumoured Taylor was not impressed that private messages between the duo were made public during her legal battle with Justin Baldoni), because Blake wasn’t seen at the wedding, but was photographed 300km away the day before….
