‘Wear the Damn G-String*’ TBH with Brodie Kane On a Big Shift She’s Felt This Year that Has Something (And Nothing?) to Do With a G-String…

Samsung s25 Post

Let's be friends!

The books we're reading, the vibrators we're using, the rants we're having and more in our weekly EDM.

For the last wee while, Brodie’s underwear drawer has been strictly reserved for sensible, comfortable, black, no VPL high-cut briefs… but now, things are a’changing, and a smattering of g-strings are now in the mix. Yes, this is a story about g-strings, but it’s also about something else entirely…

Welcome to TBH – To Be Honest – Capsule’s monthly column with our brand-new columnist and old pal, Brodie Kane!

For her previous columns, click here!

This column is kind of about g-strings and kind of not. The g-string is more the symbol – but the wearing of the g-string plays a role too.

We’re funny beings, us women, aren’t we?

Ok, I suppose I’m just really speaking for myself, but hear me out.

I remember there being a period in my life where I did own and wear g-strings (I used to even wear them running/at the gym but thank goodness I saw the commando-light on that one, haha!) and then, as if almost overnight, something happened and something changed in my psyche and I HATED them. Stopped wearing them instantly. Yuck, get away from me you wretched string up my back passage. When I think back, it also coincides with the time I basically buried any form of nice/sexy underwear, and she was in a comfortable, black, no-VPL high-cut brief.

I can’t tell you when this moment occurred exactly, but I would hazard a guess it was about six or seven years ago.

Up until a couple of months ago, me and my comfortable, black, no-VPL high-cut briefs were exclusive. Ok, ok so I branched out to a skin colour model every now and then, but day in, day out, me and those undies have been going strong.

But, the g-string, and even the creeping in of other sexy items have been a really welcome addition to my life again.

Why?

Confidence.

Something has happened to me this year and I am absolutely running with it.

I feel the most confident in my skin in recent memory. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with weight (because let’s be honest, we spend way too much time agonising over that), or how my body even looks (because let’s be honest, we spend way too much time agonising over that). It’s how I FEEL (gosh this is feeling a bit nauseating, but let’s run with it because it’s true).

I’m not saying I feel absolutely confident and positive every hour of every day – but there’s definitely something different about how I feel within myself.

And, it must be confidence, right?

I think this year I’ve realised how much you enjoy life, enjoy time, enjoy adventures when you feel confident.

Now, I’m not saying I wasn’t a confident person – but there’s this added layer to it this year.

As I write this I’m trying to put my finger on what it is. And maybe it’s a combination of things:

  • Being 38 and single and loving the freedom that comes with that
  • Nurturing and running with that freedom
  • Realising how much time and energy is wasted having thoughts about yourself that literally no one else has (and if they did, they’re not the people for you)
  • A smattering of fantastic sexual encounters
  • Coachella: seeing hundreds of thousands of people wearing whatever they wanted, NGAF about anything other than how they feel
  • Operating with the above attitude and realising how liberating it is!
  • How infectious it is – catching it AND passing it on

So there we were at Coachella, and I wore the g-string! I’d panic-bought some nice Bendon pieces and the g-string the day before going away (classic Brodie move) you see, and not only did I wear the g-string, I wore it with a lace skirt. Now, the cynical older version of me would’ve pooh-poohed this look – even a year ago Brodie wouldn’t have worn it!

But this added layer has also brought out a softer side of me, broken down those protective walls a little bit.

You know what? I felt great.

And then only a couple of weeks ago, I bloody well did it again! To the Aotearoa Music Awards. Actually, if we were adding additions to the things back up a couple of paras, then maybe we’d just add music and all things music-themed and how that makes me feel too. The joy live music brings me must mean it helps with that layer of feeling safe in being me in whatever iteration of me it is.

I just got another haul of Bendon Lingerie and BOY am I frothing to wear it.

What has HAPPENED to me? Whatever it is, I love it. I’m rolling with it. I hope in some way this infects you to feel the same, or start to think that way at least.

Wear the damn g-string*

*or the brief, or whatever makes you feel confident, I appreciate they still very much are up our arses haha.
