THE ONE THING… ‘I Cannot Recommend Enough to Postpartum Mums’

Shark Post Top

Let's be friends!

The books we're reading, the vibrators we're using, the rants we're having and more in our weekly EDM.

What’s the one postpartum must have you really should put on the top of your wishlist? New mum Amy Lyall says it’s this…

Welcome to The One Thing! Every week we’re bringing you the one nugget of info that you need to know or didn’t know you needed to know! Whether it’s a tip to make your life a little easier, a pearl of wisdom, something to make you think, or maybe something to make you laugh, The One Thing is here to serve you every Friday!

If you’ve got a suggestion or submission for The One Thing – maybe something about the industry you work in that you think others should know! – please send your thoughts to alice@capsulenz.com. We’d love to hear from you! When it comes to motherhood, people are all too willing to dish out any and every piece of advice or opinion they’ve ever had.

As someone who has been through postpartum, I know how overwhelming it can be, but I’ve got one piece of advice I really think is worth sharing.

If there is one thing you do for yourself after having your baby, make it buying yourself one good outfit – that fits.

If you’re having a winter baby, buy yourself a new pair of jeans that fit. It doesn’t matter if they are three sizes bigger than what you would consider ‘normal’, just get something that feels comfortable.

Same goes for a summer baby – buy a new pair of shorts or a dress, so if you do have a lunch, or you’re meeting friends out, you can wear something and feel comfortable.

One of the hardest things about navigating that postpartum world is feeling like none of your maternity clothes fit right anymore, of you just cannot stand the sight of them.

And let’s be real, a majority of us are not snapping back to our pre-baby wardrobe immediately – if ever – so treating yourself to just one good outfit will give you a nice option when you do want to wear something other than pyjamas or activewear.

My daughter was born in May, which meant I spent several weeks pretty much living in a dressing gown, or pyjamas, which was so easy and comfortable.

But there were several times where my husband and I were getting ready to go out and I felt like I had nothing to wear. I remember standing in front of my wardrobe, sobbing because I had nothing that fit me that I could wear.

I could blame it all on the hormones, but every woman has had that moment where you’ve got nothing that fits right and it sends you into a spiral. Throw in a completely new body and it’s a lot worse.

So, I treated myself to an outfit that became easy to throw on when I had something that required more than what had become my standard mum uniform of a T-shirt or hoodie and yoga pants or bike shorts.

Honestly, it was one of the best things I did for myself and it saved me from so many meltdowns and tears because I had something to wear that actually felt good – and not just because it didn’t smell like baby vomit.

It can be so hard to get used to your new body, especially if you are breastfeeding too, but I really think having at least one nice thing that fits this new you is so important.

It’ll help you feel more like yourself again, when you’re going through such a big chapter of change, but just give you that boost when you want to look nice.

Buy the outfit, ignore the size on the label because it’s for you right now, and you need to do this for yourself.
