Lulu Wilcox has worked with some of NZ’s most famous faces as a “stylist to the stars”. She’s a whizz at pulling the perfect look together for her clients – and, in the last few years she has also moved into interior design, where she works with high profile clients to explore how their personality and style can also be reflected in their homes.

When it comes to her own wardrobe, Lulu is a big fan of colour – she’s known for creating cheerful, eye-catching and stylish looks that really make her stand out in a crowd,

But, when it comes to the one thing that she thinks all Kiwi women should have in their wardrobe, it’s something a lot more classic and timeless that’s she’d recommend splashing out on – and no, it’s not a little black dress (although, splashing out on a quality one is also something she would encourage people to do).

“A timeless piece that never goes out of style is a well-tailored black blazer,” she says. “It’s a versatile wardrobe essential that exudes sophistication and can be dressed up or down for any occasion.”

Lulu says a good quality black blazer is worth shelling out extra for (if you look at if from a cost per wear basis, it’s worth the investment. “It’s a must-have for every fashionista’s closet,” she says.

Beyond a well-tailored black blazer, yes, she’d recommend a little black dress (“It’s a wardrobe staple that has saved me on countless occasions, from last-minute parties to formal events,” she says.) and a classic white button-down blouse (it’s versatile, timeless and can elevate any outfit from casual to sophisticated.”).

Then, she says, to round out your wardrobe she’d recommend investing in a high quality leather jacket (“it’s a game changer – it not only adds a cool edge to your look but it also stands the test of time in both style and durability”).

She says a good pair of stylish heels can be a good investment, but to choose very wisely.  “Ever splurged on a pair of heels that ended up gathering dust in your closet?” she says. “We’ve all been there! It’s a reminder to invest in comfortable yet stylish footwear that you’ll actually wear.”
