Tennis Core with Karen Walker: Her Perfect Looks for the ASB Classic

Toyota Post Page Top

It’s ASB Classic time where some of the world’s best tennis players descend on Auckland for the first tennis tournament of the season (literally – the first day of the tournament is New Year’s Day!). With our pals at Lexus sponsoring this year’s event, we asked ambassador and cult Kiwi designer Karen Walker for her top tennis outfit tips, and what she’ll be wearing courtside this year!

Kia ora Karen! Tell us, what makes the perfect tennis outfit?
If I’m playing I do love a classic white pleated skirt, but I have  a few classic Lacoste or adidas by Stella McCartney pieces – mostly navy or white. The most important thing is the footwear and for that I stick with adidas by Stella McCartney. If I’m watching I go with lightweight and good coverage – cotton drill pants and a long sleeved shirt with a generous sunhat and, naturally, standout shades!

Tennis core is trending right now (how timely!) – why does this trend have such enduring appeal?
There’s something elevated about a tennis look – the creams and whites, the crisp cottons, a good pair of shades – what’s not to love?

There isn’t a sport in the world where fashion is so closely tied, with iconic outfits being worn by the greats (and boundary pushers!) such as Serena Williams, or the sneaker game vibes of Coco Gauff. Why do you think fashion and tennis are so closely linked?
Traditionally tennis has had such a chic look which is always enticing and there are players out there who continue to have a very controlled, buttoned-down approach – Federer and Djokovic have always done it so well. But, I do love what the Williams sisters have done with rule-breaking in tennis looks. That for me is where the magic happens – at either end of the spectrum.

If you were heading to the ASB Classic this summer, what are you wearing?
I’d start with the hat and shades and work my way through cottons with good coverage and a great pair of fresh sneakers. If I’m at a night session at Stanley Street I usually take a wee throw for when it gets chilly also!

If you were designing a tennis outfit for a pro, what would you do – would you pay homage to anyone/anything in particular, or draw on any particular themes?
I like tennis whites – a pleated skirt for the ladies, a polo shirt for gents.
