From Shrek’s swamp to Barbie’s dreamhouse, we’ve found the most wonderful, weirdest Airbnbs available!

If you’re tired of cookie-cutter hotel rooms and generic vacation rentals, why not consider staying somewhere that offers an unforgettable and quirky experience?

From a Shrek-themed Airbnb to a converted yellow submarine, here’s a whirlwind tour of some of the most peculiar and fascinating Airbnb listings around the world.

Shrek’s Swamp

Located in the hills of the Scottish Highlands, you’ll find this cosy tree stump home made to look exactly like Shrek’s swamp house.

The inside of the house looks exactly like Shrek’s does in the film, complete with earwax candles and a green scaly chair.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an ogre’s home without an outhouse – mud bath not included!

Barbie’s Dreamhouse

Barbie’s Dreamhouse Airbnb brings the iconic doll’s world to life. The technicolour stay is located in beautiful Malibu, with breathtaking oceanfront views from the mansion.

To celebrate the Barbie film release, the Dreamhouse got a makeover and is now home to all things Ken.

Barbie fans will get the chance to stay in Ken’s cowboy-themed pink room, fit with the character’s iconic wardrobe.

There is also the opportunity to relax by the mesmerising infinity pool and take home a set of yellow-and-pink Impala skates and surfboards as a little souvenir.

Yellow Submarine

You don’t have to leave NZ to find a weird and wonderful Airbnb home. Yip, forget about hotels on your next domestic getaway – why not stay in a yellow submarine instead?

It’s outfitted comfortably, at least for a metal vessel, with quirky yellow-and-black under the sea themes.

The Invisible House

This one-of-a-kind masterpiece was designed to look like a New York skyscraper on its side.

The Invisible House, 10 minutes from downtown Joshua Tree, California, has been featured in countless music videos, television shows and dozens of publications worldwide.

The house features an entirely reflective facade that absorbs its surroundings and vanishes into the desert landscape.

Van Gogh’s ‘The Bedroom’

The Art Institute of Chicago in collaboration with Airbnb has come up with the idea of offering guests a chance to experience the life of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.

Perfect for art lovers, this one bedroom is a replica of Van Gogh’s famous painting ‘The Bedroom.’

If the room is available, you can pre-book it by mail and confirm with a handwritten letter! Remember: The internet did not exist for Van Gogh!

Prior home of Red Hot Chili Peppers

Ready to live like a rockstar in Mexico? Yes, please. But don’t worry, it’s not as chaotic as it sounds. The home features a stunning infinity pool with the most breathtaking views.

Casa Cortez is the former home of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, situated atop a cliff overlooking the gorgeous beach of Playa Del Rey.

Secluded Hobbit House

This fantasy dwelling was inspired by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien’s, The Hobbit.

Equipped with an iconic round door, natural rock walls and beautiful wood beam ceilings, it’s impossible not to experience total enchantment staying in this space.

Whether you are a couple of hardcore LOTR fans or maybe a creative individual seeking solitude to unplug for inspiration, this space will surely deliver!

‘Game of Thrones’ Apartment

With a little help from this ultra-realistic Game of Thrones apartment in the USA, you can live like the king of the Seven Kingdoms — for a few days, at least.

Adorned with armoured decor, dragon eggs, and the series’ signature phrase, “Winter is Coming” etched into a kitchen cabinet, this Airbnb is perfect for any fan of the show.

Haunted Mansion replica

This delightfully spooky bungalow recreates Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride so perfectly that you’ll want to head straight for Disneyland once you make it through the night.

Step inside and you’ll be transported to a delightfully spooky world, with the requisite creepy sounds, flickering candles, and dark corridors flanked with eerie pictures. ‘

Guests will encounter ghostly illusions and sights and sounds that will make you feel that you are truly spending the night in Disney’s Haunted Mansion.
