Heading Away For School Holidays? Here’s What You Should Never Pack in Your Checked Suitcase

If you’re heading off on holiday these school holidays (lucky you!) it might be worth brushing up on a few packing tips, including what you should never pack in your checked suitcase!

There are strict rules about what you can and can’t put in suitcases for check-in.

Basic things like lighters and matches and types of batteries are not allowed. However, there are also items it is just not sensible to wave goodbye to when you hand your luggage over at the check-in desk.

Here’s a checklist of items you really should keep out of your checked suitcase.

Medication

We all hope we won’t get delayed, but it’s best to keep any drugs you need firmly in your possession in case you are not reunited with your checked bags in good time.

Documents

If you love to still print out everything about your trip, don’t bank on the fact your suitcase will make it to your destination and keep a copy on you instead. Also if you rely on your phone for all your travel details, it’s sensible to have a paper copy too in case you lose it on the way or can’t find WiFi when you land.

Obviously passports and money should be with you too.

Computers

Apart from the battery rules, fragile gear like laptops and iPads are better in your hand luggage. Cameras are too, as well as old fashioned film rolls if you’re using it because it might be damaged by security scanners.

Fragile items

Snapped up a lovely carnival mask in Venice? Don’t risk wrapping it in a beach towel in your checked suitcase – we’ve all seen how they can be handled.

Instead carefully put it in your hand baggage.

Jewellery (including any surprises)

Planning to propose on that romantic beach? While a checked suitcase might be a great hiding spot for a ring box, it’s really not advisable to put it in there in case it goes missing on the way.

Maybe the bottom of your hand luggage would be a more sensible spot. Also get it insured before you travel! Any other jewellery should also either be worn, or safely in your carry-on.
