The BEST Road Trip Podcasts and Playlists for Your Next Summer Roadie

Toyota Post Page Top

At Capsule we love nothing more than sharing our best podcast and playlist recommendations and now we’re in the sunny (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT) summer season, we’ve trawled through our phones for the best audio picks for your upcoming roadie that’ll keep the whole car happy – who doesn’t love road trip podcasts?

Capsule x Toyota

PODCASTS:

Maintenance Phase

Maintenance Phase is a podcast debunking wellness and weight loss trends, by two extremely chatty and charismatic hosts Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. There is a plethora of great eps to get through, including the Goop episode, and the Oprah episodes. But for sheer disbelief factor, you can’t go past the Belle Gibson episode, about the Australian ‘illness influencer’ who became famous for her battle with cancer. It’s like a thriller to listen to and will have the entire car glued to the plot.

Going Through It

This is a more niche topic but if you’re at the D&M stage of a girls’ road trip, Going Through It is all about one journalist’s decision whether or not to have a baby. Ashley C Ford is a stunning writer, podcaster and journalist, who’s happily married and in her mid-thirties – and she can’t work out if she wants kids. So she gets well-known people on both sides of that decision to tell her how they picked their path. Think Elizabeth Gilbert, Roxane Gay, and more. Bound to kick off some discussions!

We Can Do Hard Things

We Can Do Hard Things is hosted by Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach and Amanda Doyle. ‘Do You Have Any Of These Beige Flags?’ episode is an absolute delight – instead of red flags that make you question a relationship, or green flags that make you go ahead with on, beige flags are the oddball signs that make you go ‘huh’ about a person. Neither good, or bad, just… interesting. Sent in by readers, this collection of beige flags is funny as hell and bound to prompt good chats in the car.

Sentimental Garbage

Sentimental Garbage is a pop culture podcast that casts a loving and critical lens over things that society has not been kind to; most of it, you guess it, aimed at women. Hosted by Irish journalist Caroline O’Donoghue, she has a great list of fellow journos who come in to defend their fave ‘guilty pleasure’. There’s a mini Sex and the City series with Dolly Alderton, but for Swifties – or, as Caroline would say, Swift-o-crats – the Midnights episode argues that Taylor’s latest album foretold her famous break-up with Joe Alwyn before it even happened. Outrageously good.

Why Won’t You Date Me

Okay you better make sure everyone in the car is over 18 and then some for this one, but Why Won’t You Date me With Nicole Byer is an unbelievably good time. Stand-up comic and Nailed It! host Nicole Byer gets celebrities to talk about their nightmare dating experiences, divorce dramas, one night stands and more. YES – it’s dishy and dirty and great for a raucous gals trip.

Celebrity Book Club

Celebrity Book Club is funny, smart and bitchy as hell. Each episode is dedicated to a celebrity memoir and these hosts are not here to suck up to the rich and famous, to put it mildly. There’s a Britney two-parter, a glorious tribute to Nora Ephron and a very entertaining Drew Barrymore ep, among others. Let’s just say if you differ from Capsule’s view on the Prince Harry book, you’ve found your people here.

The Girls Uninterrupted

If you want unfiltered gals chat that’ll make you reach for the nearest glass of wine, you’ll love The Girls Uninterrupted, hosted by our pals Brodie Kane, Caitlin Marett and Gracie Taylor. From dating, icks, personal trials and tribulations and just plain silliness, the gals have you covered in a delightfully irreverent way.

Off Menu

Hosted by UK comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble, Off Menu gets famous people to line up their dream dinner menu – starter, main, drink and dessert (not in that order). An absolute plethora of guests to pick from, the best part is it will prompt YOU to discuss your death-row meal, which can only act as inspiration for the inevitable girl dinner taking place later on. (Although we call it ‘platter dinner,’ because we are not young). Do NOT miss the Greg Davies (the Taskmaster host) episode.

PLAYLISTS (search on Spotify)

You’re a Single Mom in the 90s Cleaning Her House

So niche but doesn’t that title really evoke something deep inside of you? Team, all the best roadie songs (but not toooo roadie songs) are here – Celine, Cher, Abba, Faith Hill, Whitney. A highlight is of course It’s All Coming Back to Me Now because Jesus that song just keeps on giving and no one outside the car can hear you as you try and hit that high note.

2000s Girls Road Trip

If you’re in your mid-thirties, this playlist will send you straight back to year 12, minus the weird peplum tops and Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. From Beiber to the Backstreet Boys, with plenty of RnB in the form of Ne-Yo, Sean Kingston (!!!) and T.I, it’s just banger after banger after banger. Even the little dash of Soulja Boy will be welcome.

NZ Summer Playlist

If the sun’s beating down, you’re driving in the wop wops in the search of a dairy to grab a Trumpet and your end destination is the beach, you really can only reach for one thing. Go down the reggae, easy beats route with this Six-60 inspired list which has some cool new stuff, as well as the classic oldies that even your parents will vibe with.

100 Greatest Summer Songs

Sometimes you have to please a whole heap of different music tastes and you’re out of radio reception so you can’t just rely on The Breeze like we all normally do. Hit this playlist and literally everyone’s happy – from Dua Lipa to Tina Turner, Fleetwood Mac to Coldplay, you’re sorted and NO ONE CAN COMPLAIN.
