Need to Get Out of the House? Our Pick of the Best Events and Experiences to Do Right Now

We’re all a bit sick of the couch at the moment – is it possible to clock Netflix? Because I feel like I’m almost there.

From arcade games and skin treatments, through to high teas and comedy shows, here are Capsule’s picks for the best events and experiences to treat yourself – go on, you deserve it.

TIMEZONE NEWMARKET

From the old school Space Invaders, Air Hockey and Basketball Toss through to Virtual Reality, Spin Bumper Cars and even Laser Tag, Timezone’s massive new entertainment venue in Newmarket is absolutely bursting with fun for kids (and adults, no judge) of all ages.

Oh, did we mention Dance Dance Revolution? Get in line kids, the adults will be cutting some sweet shapes!

If you’re keen to embrace your inner kid and embarrass any real kids at the same time, Timezone are hosting an official opening on Saturday 4 July – and everyone’s welcome.

SKINTOPIA

A new concept in the heart of Auckland’s newest shopping complex, Commercial Bay, Skintopia is the perfect place to pop in for a quick treatment that’ll have you glowing – like, actually glowing.

Instead of the usual plinky plonky soundtrack and relaxing atmos, Skintopia are all about revving you up and leaving you feeling energised and revitalised with their Pro Skin 30 or Pro Skin 60 minute treatments that are easy to squeeze in a lunch break. You get a bespoke skin evaluation and you can choose to ‘Power Up’ your treatment with additional add ons like micro current or hydrodermabrasion.

AUCKLAND ZOO’S NEW PRIMATE HABITAT

Seeing Auckland Zoo’s monkeys and orangutans is always a highlight, and now you can see some of their residents thrive in a brand new enclosure that closely mimics their South East Asian origins. The first stage of the $60m South East Asia Jungle Track opened to the public this week, and you’ll be able to spot three orangutans and two siamangs climbing 25 metre high pathways, without having to watch the animals through glass.

The 20s haven’t exactly got off to the roaring start we were hoping for, but for a few hours at Hotel Debrett, you can pretend! From 1pm on Saturday and Sunday, you can take a step back into last century with their decadent 20s themed high tea, with goodies such as smoked salmon pinwheels, prawn cocktails and Jaffa mousse. Hotel Debrett’s gorgeous gramophone will provide the soundtrack, and opt to indulge in a glass of bubbles or two. Bookings essential.

THE HIGH NOTE

With most of the big movie companies moving around their release dates, thanks to Covid-19, it’s been a while since there’s been a good reason to go back to the movie theatres. But oh, what a novelty they are!

Thankfully, The High Note hit cinemas this week – and after we were treated to a sneak preview last week, we can confirm it’s a good time. It’s a charming break from reality – with a gorgeous soundtrack, and we will follow Tracee Lee Ross anywhere she goes.

Set in LA, the film follows an overworked personal assistant, Maggie (played by Dakota Johnson) who is tiring of running errands for her superstar boss, Grace (Tracee Ellis Ross). While she harbours dreams of living out her childhood fantasies of becoming a music producer, an opportunity presents itself – but could come at great cost…

Grab your girlfriends, a glass of wine and some popcorn and check it out!
